The Seven Sexiest Vampire Moments!

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

After a brief slow-down following the end of the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, vampires are back in a major way, largely due to the huge popularity of HBO’s adult-themed True Blood and the vapid tween sensation Twilight.

Vampires can be used as metaphors for a number of human conditions, but these days bloodsuckers are mostly about one thing: sex. Sometimes the sexuality is dark and goth, sometimes steamy, and occasionally, even funny. Here are seven choice moments that bring to light the libidinous longings of the creatures of the night.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Cordy is the Meat in a Vamp Sandwich

In the ninth episode of season 3 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, valley girl Cordelia makes a wish that inadvertently brings her into an alternate universe where vampires are running Sunnydale. She soon encounters new versions of her old pals, including Willow and Xander, who in this reality have been turned into vampires. Not good for Cordy, as the vampire couple apparently get their ya-yas by sucking the blood out of humans together in a frightening menage a tois.

Queen of the Damned - Vampire nesting

Based on the book of the same name by Anne Rice, Queen of the Damned is reviled by purists of Anne Rice’s works, as well as anyone who likes their movies to be, you know, good. One of the few saving graces is a steamy bit of vampire lovemaking that occurs right before the climax (insert joke here), featuring the hot bodies of Stuart Townsend and the late Aaliyah.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula - Pretty much all of it

Bram Stoker’s Dracula was a sumptuous feast for the eyes, and almost every panel drips with eroticism, from Jonathan Harker’s visit to Dracula’s mansion in which he is accosted by three randy vampire women, to a somewhat laughable scene in which the character of Lucy has an indecent liaison with Dracula while in werewolf form. But the real focus is on Dracula’s (Gary Oldman) intense and undying love for Mina Harker (Wynona Ryder), and their onscreen chemistry is definitely to be remembered.

Interview with a Vampire - Lestat chows down on Louis

Within the first few minutes of Interview with a Vampire, we meet Brad Pitt’s Louis, see how he is miserable with his life, and watch as he is turned into a vampire by the outrageous Lestat, played by Tom Cruise. But rather than resembling your typical monster movie attack, the look on Louis’ face is one of erotic ecstasy, and Anne Rice’s view of vampiric intimacy immediately becomes manifest.

Underworld: Evolution - Selene and Michael…hide out

One of my favorite horror movie cliches is that when the good guys momentarily escape from the bad guys, instead of making sure they’re safe and creating plans to further distance themselves from danger, they instead figure now’s a good a time as any to knock boots. In Underworld: Evolution, vampire Selene and vampire-werewolf-hybrid Michael do just that, and in the back of a truck no less! Despite the contrivance, it’s probably the best scene in the whole movie.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Buffy loses her neck virginity to Angel

Sure, Buffy lost her actual virginity to Angel a year and a half prior, but that was tender, Sarah McLachlan lovemaking. The real heat came at the end of the third season (arguably the series’ best) when Buffy had Angel drink her super-duper Slayer blood to cure him of a deadly poison. With close-ups of hands on bodies and eyes rolling in ecstasy, the scene was shot like a sex scene, and after the series finale ended, we all wiped a tear from our eye…then took a cold shower.

True Blood - Bill claws his way out of the ground for some Sookie nookie

There’s a reason True Blood airs on HBO, and much has been made of the occasionally gratuitous nudity and sex scenes. Me, I’m not complaining. But whatever your inclination, no one could argue it was not absolutely essential to the plot when in one episode, genteel vampire Bill is thought to be dead, and his lover, Sookie, wanders the graveyard, distraught. Turns out he was just underground, healing, and sensing that she’s near, he emerges from the dirt, naked, and grabs for his mortal love. Fear turns quickly to arousal for Sookie, and, well, you know what happens next.

But these are just seven examples of just how hot the cold-blooded can get. Feel free to share some of your own!

The Top Seven Sexiest Women of Fantasy!

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

Okay, one thing I’ve learned in an exhaustive search of sexy ladies is that while many people fetishize the women of sci-fi (Aeon Flux, Trinity, Barbarella, etc), fantasy women are not considered equal in the allure department.

Sure, there are the metal-bikini-clad ladies of Boris Vallejo’s paintings, but when you look at fullly realized fantasy stories, truly sexy women are not really that common.  But that’s not to say they don’t exist…

This is a list of seven sexy fantasy characters who have appeared in film and television and realized by a real-life actress – no cartoons or literary heroines. It’s a truly academic study, so be sure to take notes. There’ll be a quiz.

7. Akasha

The late Aaliyah was a surprising choice for many people when she was cast as the immortal, ancient Vampire Queen, Akasha, for the film version of Anne Rice’s Queen of the Damned. But doubts were put to rest when she made her grand entrance and almost sizzled through the screen. Though the film itself is widely considered lacking (and that’s being kind), her erotic performance is considerably more significant seeing as it was also her last film before her untimely death.

6. Faith Lehane

When Faith burst into Sunnydale on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she took a lot of the wind out of Buffy’s sails by being funnier, sexier, and more violent than the other Slayer in town, even going so far as deflowering Buffy’s good buddy Xander. Faith was known for her flamboyant wardrobe, and with her descent into evil came more tight leather pants. Anyone complaining?

5. Catwoman

I won’t make a nine lives joke (you’re welcome), but this is a character who has gone through many incarnations, most of which are not fantastical at all. But in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, the script envisioned Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer) as a mousy secretary who is magically brought back to life by cats and turned into a stunningly sexy, sensual psychobabe with her sights set on the similarly S&M-garbed Batman. (The less said about the Halle Berry film, the better.)

4. Elizabeth Swan

Being overtly sexual doesn’t necessarily make one sexy. Often what we don’t see is what sets our imaginations (and hormones) ablaze, and who better to exemplify this than the unbelievably gorgeous Keira Knightly in her role as the spunky, heroic Elizabeth Swan in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. What other woman would enrapture the likes of Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom with such ease?

3. Selene

When ads for Underworld first appeared, many wrote it off as just another Matrix rip-off that happened to focus on vampires and werewolves, with Kate Beckinsale’s Selene stepping in as a poor man’s Trinity. In a way, they were right. But if they didn’t stick around for the sequel, they missed a scorching love scene where we learn what comes between Selene and her leathers – nothing – and discover that she truly is one of the hottest supernatural women around.

2. Princess Leia

Hey, remember those body-hiding white robes from A New Hope? Neither do I.

1. Legolas

It takes a lot to keep up with two men and never mess up your hair, but when Legolas went off on a journey with Aragorn and Gimli to save two kidnapped hobbits, she truck a blow for feminism everywhere. Throughout the Lord of the Rings trilogy, she jumped, slashed, and shot her arrows through a vast array of baddies without ever breaking a nail, earning her the number one spot on our sexiest women of fantasy.

Just kidding. Presenting our real number one, as if it’s any surprise…

1. Tie - Xena and Gabrielle

For six seasons, we watched these women go through a myriad of adventures and scandalously racy outfits on Xena: Warrior Princess, and the question of which one is hotter has never been settled. And so, the number one spot is a tie between the two ladies who made history in this ground-breaking show.

BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN is Right: Ancient Egypt is Really, Really Cool

The sequel to Ben Stiller’s Night at the Museum opens this week, cumbersomely titled Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. In the first film, Larry, a divorced dad played by Stiller, ends up as a night watchmen at the Museum of Natural History. What sets the movie’s plot in motion by magically causing all the museum’s creatures and statues to come to life? Something called the Tablet of Akmenrah from Ancient Egypt.

Oh, that Ben Stiller. You never know what he’ll get himself into next.

While not a great deal of thought was put into the plot of this family comic adventure, it is interesting to note their use of a magical Egyptian object as a plot device.

Let’s face it: there is something about ancient Egypt that fascinates modern man.

And why wouldn’t it? It’s one of the oldest civilizations known to us, yet capable of creating astounding works of art and architecture that survive to this day. The Ancient Egyptians seem exotic to us, almost alien, and yet oddly familiar – they went to school, worked, worshiped their gods, and got drunk, just like we do today. And in that order, too.

For fantasy fans in particular, Egypt holds a special appeal. Mysticism was a way of life in Egypt. There was a strong belief in gods, the afterlife, and magic, and this acceptance of the supernatural, coupled with their infamous practices concerning dead bodies, can create a strong foundation for a great fantasy story.

Egypt has been creeping into fantastical cinema almost since the dawn of film itself. Certainly most famous was Boris Karloff as the title role in 1932’s The Mummy, one of the most iconic early horror films starring the actor who also played Frankenstein’s monster. This film was reimagined (isn’t that verb stale yet?) for 1999’s film of the same name starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, a special effects-fueled blockbuster which spawned three sequels, including The Mummy Returns, which features a pretty awesome flashback scene in Ancient Egypt.

Both Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess had episodes in which their heroes were involved with plots that took place in Egypt. The Xena episode was particular compelling, as it featured Xena impersonating Cleopatra in the Queen’s palace itself.

Anne Rice explored Egypt in her Vampire Chronicles, which were brought to the screen in 2002’s Queen of the Damned, starring the late Aaliyah as the first vampire, a Queen from ancient Egypt. It’s a bittersweet film to watch in light of the actress/singer’s untimely death, but despite the film itself being a tad subpar, Aaliyah herself puts on quite a show.

Bruce Cambpell, that king of B-movies, fought a mummy in 2002’s Bubba Ho-tep, and did it while wearing an Elvis jumpsuit.

And speaking of B-movies, 2004’s Catwoman featured a plot in which a cat from ancient Egypt brought Halle Berry’s character back to life after someone killed her for, well, making Catwoman.

So it looks as though the land of the Nile will continue to be a muse for authors and screenwriters for years to come. Oh, I almost forgot – one of the most riveting fantasy films of all time is set in Egypt, and features a wicked pharaoh, a young seer, curses, telekinesis, transfiguration, sorcerors, and tons of other silly fantasy cliches. Oh, that Ten Commandments. Good flick.
