Ask the Oracle: CLASH OF THE TITANS a Trilogy? No More Spock (or Acting) for Leonard Nimoy?

Q: Is it true that Clash of the Titans is the first in a trilogy? — Manuel, Phoenix, AZ

A: Well, maybe. Clash of the Titans director Louis Leterrier recently told FirstShowing.Net, “Warner [Brothers] came to me and said, ‘We’ll greenlight your movie if you promise us [two more.]‘ You can tell that that story the story doesn’t end at the Clash of the Titans… And I said ‘thanks a lot’ because I love doing that. And I had to write two stories.

“I promise you that I’ve got more,” he continued. “And I’ve got good more. It’s not like I’ve got more of the same. I’ve got more of different, and mythology is just like… We’ve opened the door.”

But think about what he’s saying: having greenlit a $70 million, CGI-intensive fantasy film, the studio is interested in turning it into an ongoing franchise if it’s a hit.

Um, duh? That’s how virtually every $70 million+ film is conceived these days. The studio might’ve taken it a bit further in this case by having the director write out treatments or even potential screenplays for the next movies in the series, order to make the first movie make more sense. But there’s real no news here.

Bottom line: it all depends on how Clash of the Titans does at the box office this Friday. If it’s a hit (Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean), a sequel is inevitable. If it’s a flop (e.g. Eragon, The Golden Compass), a sequel has no chance in hell.

Whether it will be a hit, even the All-Knowing, Fantasy-Questioning-Answering Oracle doesn’t know the answer to that (although I’ve seen it, and I officially predict that it will open strong, then business will drop dramatically when word gets out how surprisingly lackluster it is).

Q: I read that Leonard Nimoy is giving up acting — that Fringe is his last role. So no more Spock? — MonsterMash, Detroit, MI

A: That’s (sort of) what he told the Calgary Herald last week.

“I don’t see it happening,” Leonard Nimoy told them of another appearance by Spock. “I’m comfortable. I’m not glad, I’m not sad. I feel like I’ve had a great ride with the character [of Spock].”

Asked if his reoccurring role of William Bell on Fringe was his last acting role, he said, “I certainly hope so. I’ve been doing it long enough, so I hope so. I’ve had a great, great run and I have no unfulfilled dreams or aspirations.”

I feel like I’m doing nothing this week but splashing cold water on the work of other writers, but this article reads more to me like a media outlet trying to come up with an attention-getting headline than any real news. Once again, Nimoy is just stating the obvious: first, he’s 79 years old (as of last Friday). Plus, we’ve long known that he’s “passed the torch” to Zachary Quinto in the Star Trek franchise reboot, and that he isn’t scheduled to appear in any more movies (which wouldn’t make much sense anyway).

On the other hand, what if another great role came along, in some Spock-related project (like a video game or a spoof) or some other TV show or movie? I bet three years ago he didn’t think he’d be appearing in Fringe.

The Oracle doesn’t read any great, new declaration in these comments that he wouldn’t take the role.

CotT a trilogy? Urgh… this is going to involve some major trashing of the myths, isn’t it?

  2. Patrick says:

Actually Leonard Nimoy did do voiceover work as Spock for the Star Trek Online game that was released a few months ago. Zachary Quinto also did work on the title, although not as Spock.
