Farewell, LEGEND OF THE SEEKER: A Eulogy

Posted on 29 April 2010 by Tim O'Leary, Associate Editor

The search for the Stone of Tears may lead to actual weeping.

This has not been a good couple of years for fans of sci-fi and fantasy. Sadly, The Legend of the Seeker now joins Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Dollhouse in the ranks of shows that reached their second seasons only to be unjustly canceled just as they really started to work their mojo.

I’ll admit it — when I first saw ads for Seeker, I didn’t think I would like it that much. It looked so old school, with its Xena-esque costumes and firmly un-ironic dialogue. The Sword of Truth? A Wizard of the First Order? Surely the show wouldn’t be any good.

Man, did I eat my words after seeing the very first episode.

From the get go, Seeker knew exactly what it was doing at every turn, crafting excellent high fantasy plots with kick-ass action and small but delightful sprinklings of humor. The main cast — Craig Horner, Bridget Regan, Bruce Spence, and the superbly villainous Craig Parker — were top notch, and with the addition in the second season of the sublime Tabrett Bethell, the show hit a truly awesome streak.

One of the characteristics that made it stand out was its incredible fight choreography and cinematography. Rarely do combat scenes ever look this beautiful and brutal on the small screen, but Seeker brought cinema-worthy fights, from one-on-one duels to large-scale melees, with every single episode.

Legend of the Seeker has been a mainstay for us here at TheTorchOnline.com. Over the past two years we’ve reviewed most of the episodes, as well as conducted interviews with the producers and stars, including Craig Horner, Bridget Regan, and Tabrett Bethell, all of whom were gracious and charming. (And I learned, to my eternal delight, that Bridget Regan reads our reviews when she quoted something I had written about her costume!)

Last year, Horner’s Richard Cypher even made our list of the Top 7 Sexiest Men of Fantasy (and don’t be surprised to see more of the cast making the lists again this summer!) and the aforementioned fight scenes made our list of Best Magical Fights.

Though the show only had a third of the life of its predecessor Xena, it has delivered two full seasons’ worth of excellent episodes, and thanks to DVDs and the internet, the show will live on.

The adventures of Richard and company will not be forgotten any time soon by its legion of fans, and you can be sure we here at TheTorchOnline.com won’t forget them either. We still have the rest of this season to review — and the next episode looks awesome, with the newly-resurrected Darken Rahl — and who knows what retrospectives, lists, or other wacky articles the folks of the Midlands may find their way into?

One thing’s for sure. There may not be a new season of Seeker next fall, but its spirit will be kept alive.

legend of the seeker has great lessons that apply to real life situations & with great lessons for grownups & teens alike like true love, true friendship, morals, adventure, magic,& family values which not many shows have plus the show is superb with actress Bridget Regan & Craig Horner,Bruce Spence & Tabrett Bethell so I hope all fans will fight for a 3 season which it certainly deserves it is the best TV show on TV today for me to watch.also we should let other people know about the show because when I 1st ran across the show I was hooked on the show I told my cousin about it & she was hooked on the show right away just like I was.Smallville had a bumpy ride also but still made it to a lot more seasons than we ever thought it would so legend of the seeker if fans fight back & write to the stations will still have hope for the 3 season which I can hardly wait for if they continue which they should continue legend of the seeker for a 3 season.it is worth it.legend of the seeker is far better than the show Smallville so it certainly deserves to get to a 3 season.fans when you write to the station & tell them how great a job they did with legend of the seeker write to them with nice words & so they pick up legend of the seeker for a 3 season.

i cried a bit…even had some trouble breathing after i heard this bit of news. WHYYYYYY?! WHY cancel this awesome series? WHY do the good ones always get the Axe (its almost criminal)? where am i (and all the fans everywhere) gonna get my(our) regular but oh so rare weekly fantasy fix?

  3. SeekerFan says:

This is a sad, sad shame. None of us are ready to let go of this show yet. If “Walter” was any indication, these last few episodes will make it even more difficult to let go. Well, I’m not ready to give up yet. I’ll gladly join the ranks and do battle to save LOTS. And you can bet, these 2 seasons will have a place in my DVD library.

If the fight doesn’t go our way, I just wanted to let you know I’ve enjoyed reading your reviews for this wonderful show. I may not have always agreed with your view or always responded, but I ALWAYS read and enjoyed…Thank you..You do good work!

this is shocking and depressing news
why are they always taking the good shows off air
Dollhouse, Terminator and now Legend of the Seeker
they were are great shows and entertaining

Legend of the Seeker has to be one of the best shows around i have lost my faith in tv programing the only reason i turn it on was because of Legend of the Seeker

come on guys we have to have season 3

  5. chelsea says:

This sux! I honestly could cry right now! This is the best show ever! I really hope the show gts a third season due to the protest of the fans. But I’m not getting my hopes up only to have them crushed..

  6. Agent 86 says:

    Great article.

It’s a shame to see Legend of the Seeker end so soon, but that seems to happen to a lot of good TV these days (the aforementioned Firefly, Dollhouse, etc) while complete and utter trash (to put it politely) like “Two and a Half Men”, “Heroes”, etc just keeps running and running and running (even though they’re completely different beasts since Seeker is syndicated, fantasy, aimed at people with more than 2 brain cells, etc).

Hopefully the cast go onto bigger and better things. Bridget Regan for Wonder Woman! Tabrett Bethell for Valkyrie! Craig Horner for Hawkeye!

  7. isoron says:

Sorry to see the show end. Doubbt it would be picked up by SyFy which is turning into the network for Ghost Chasers and Wrestling and other great shows for its demographic “adolescent boys of all ages”.

  8. Fans have changed the fate of StartTrek and FireFly in the past, so anything can happen with Legend of the Seeker.

Tim, I love your reviews and thank you for all the coverage!!

  9. prmoon says:

It’s sad to see this show end, I started reading the books and I am hooked, hope that a miracle happens and we see last minute reprieve, wish it would have some kind of finale, farewell Seeker it was fun and will finish reading the rest of the series.

  10. Shane says:

We can save this show. The fans are coming together doing everything we possibly can to save this show, and we will do it. So it’s not lost just yet! :)

  11. Dan says:

There is still hope. We have to keep fighting for LotS season 3!

  12. Henry says:

Guys, I want to save Seeker, too.

But everyone involved, including the stars, have tweeted that the show is canceled. Yes, the studio refuses to say anything despite an uproar on the internet, but they’re not doing that because there’s “still hope.” They’re doing it because they’re pissed and upset (and rightly so) that they’re all out of jobs.

By all means, let’s get this campaign going, and everyone should buy the Season One DVD (that’s the ONLY way the studio will pay attention), but don’t harsh on the Torch (or any other website) for jumping the gun. That’s just silly.

  13. Nicnac says:

are they playing the episodes in order of shooting this season? All I remember was last seasons juggling act like they were TRYING to get it cancelled. Episode 4 followed by 3, then 5 followed by 6 a repeat of 4… All the while, each episode having the wrong title and description… it was a mess…

  14. SPL says:

Legend of the Seeker is AMAZING! And its become really popular…I don’t really understand why they would even want to cancel it. Richard & Kahlan have the most beautiful love story ever! and I haven’t had enough of them! I honestly expected this show to go on for many years because not only does it have the most amazing romance, its also got awesome action, comedy, a little horror at times, and just about everything you could ever want from a show! I REFUSE TO LOSE HOPE! WE WILL SAVE OUR SEEKER!!!

  15. audrey says:

I still can´t believe that Legend Of the Seeker is not renew.
This is the my favourite show ever. I will keep fighting for season 3.

  16. farLOTSfan says:

Thanks for all the entertaining reviews and extra publicity for Legend Of The Seeker … but please, as long as there isn’t an official statement there is hope … and even then a lot of fans won’t be willing to give up.

  17. Jimmy says:

Depressing… I still haven’t found the time to catch up completely, but this show is amazing.

  18. Lauren says:

We’re still fighting for season 3!

  19. Jolene says:

We’re FIGHTING BACK!!! We are looking to raise money for an ad!! CHECK IT OUT!!

  20. sookie says:

We are still fighting to keep Legend of the Seeker on the air, I don’t believe the official word had been posted yet. The fans are doing what we can to save our show

  21. Well written article but the show is not cancelled yet - we fans are massing a save our seeker campaign and we will get a s3. The cast and crew of this show have given us 2 wonderful years and showed that fantasy shows are not dead and can be as great and entertaining as anything else on TV. Help us #saveourseeker please.

  22. Palidore says:

Appreciate the words, but Legend of the Seeker may yet receive the breath of life!

We’re fighting hard. Decisions can and have been reversed on shows when fans have given them reasons to. And we’re giving them reasons to.

  23. queenb13 says:

Great article, and it’s so nice you appreciate our Seeker. What this show needs most is visibility, and we, the fans, have not given up yet! As others have said, join the fight! It may be David and Goliath, but as Zedd would say, “Nothing is ever easy.” If we can’t get a season 3, maybe we will get a mini-series, who know!

Links are already posted here, we’ll be happy to see you…

I also wanted to mention how much I have enjoyed reading your ongoing reviews for the episodes each week. They have been very enjoyable. Thanks!

    • Thank you for stopping by each week!

Losing this show is pretty devastating … if you guys can actually turn it around, you’ll have my undying respect and admiration!

This really has become one of my favorites, and it’s certainly a favorite of ours here at the Torch.

  24. Donna says:

Thank You! You have shown a depth of knowledge and respect for both the show and its actors. However, ABC has not offically cancelled, it’s not dead yet.

  25. Mysticgal says:

There is a massive campaign under way…fans of LOTS will not go down without a fight! This shows deserves a season 3….it’s not over until it’s over!

  26. Jessica Jones says:

  27. Technically, it’s NOT cancelled yet. Seeker fans have organized a massive online protest and they’re collecting donations for a print ad in Variety.

ABC Studios has yet to make a formal announcement but even if they give up on the series itself fans will probably ask for a mini-series or maybe a movie.

    • Xander says:

I want the show saved as much as anybody, but has a fan campaign ever actually succeeded in saving a show?

I’m not being obnoxious — I honestly don’t know the answer. But I hope it’s yes! Because this show definitely needs to continue.

      • Jay says:

One example I can think of is Jericho. Firefly got a movie (Serenity) due to fan response.

In neither case did it go any further. Jericho got just the one more run and then it was canceled. Serenity didn’t make enough money to justify a second movie.

        • Xander says:

Did Firefly get a movie because of “fan response?” I thought it was, more specifically, due to the high number of DVD sales.

If fans want to save the show, they should consider going out en masses and buying all of the season One DVDs. THAT would send a message!

        • Mave says:

Yes, but the “saved” JERICO totally bombed in the ratings. Everyone in Hollywood remembers that, which is why these campaigns will (probably) never work again.

That said, I do think SEEKER is a little different, being syndicated. It could be picked up by SyFy.

          • Xander says:

Family Guy! Family Guy was canceled by Fox and then brought back. Why?

PEOPLE BOUGHT THE DVDs. Do it!!

      • Beth says:

The Original Star Trek, Quantum Leap, Farscape (got a miniseries if not another season) all come to mind.

  28. Necros says:

Great article! But let’s hope things turn around and we will have a third season!

In case this is the end: Thank you to everyone involved in the making of this wonderful show! And Tabrett, you are the best! :) I wish you all the best! And if we can’t see you as Cara later this year, I hope you’ll find an other show that we can watch too soon.

  29. Jason says:

Great post. Still in shock. The cancellation sucks mightily.
