Celebrate Fantasy with … Mozilla Firefox?

Posted on 15 March 2010 by John Carlson

I recently installed the newest Mozilla Firefox, and I discovered one fun improvement: it can celebrate fantasy.

Celebrate fantasy? A web browser?

Yes. Firefox now has built in support for “Personas,” a new type of theme. Personas are sort of like wall paper. They have some sort of image, and they are displayed in the background of the Firefox window. The Persona is most noticeable on the top part of the window in the area around the buttons.

The Firefox web site has a large gallery (more than 30,000!) of Personas. Like Firefox, they are priced at an everyday low price of $0. After browsing a while, it became clear to me that there is a Persona for (almost) every imaginable interest.

There are many fantasy-specific Personas, including ones for Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Twilight, Chronicles of Narnia, and Alice in Wonderland. There are also generic Personas featuring vampires and ghosts.

The Persona gallery can be searched. If you can’t find something that’s just right, you can easily create your own.

Firefox 3.6 has built in support for Personas. An add on gives support for Firefox 3.0 or better, and additional features for Firefox 3.6.
