Surprising absolutely no one, The CW has confirmed to the Chicago Tribune that it has renewed Supernatural for a sixth season — something that has been hinted at all year long. Better still, creator Eric Kripke will remain at the helm.
“We’re climaxing that story this season,” executive producer Sera Gamble said of the current “apocalypse” storyline. “We’ve been working on the Season 6 storyline for quite some time, and we’re very excited about it. We have lots of ideas, and are grateful for the chance to keep the show going.”
Kripke had previously spoken about his “five-year plan” for the show and hinted that he would not continue after that — although his comments about ending the series had become far more ambiguous in the last year.
The CW has also announced that it is renewing The Vampire Diaries for a second season, which is also no surprise, since the show has been a solid hit for the network.

A bit late to the party, but this news made me very excited. I only started watching from midway through S4 and am not ready for it to leave my screen just yet. Happy to say that I’ve finally caught up with the first three seasons. I quite enjoyed the storyline in S2 which had a great mix of angst and humor, and even the standalone episodes factored into the greater mytharc of the show. Looking forward to seeing what they do next season.
I’m just glad that Supernatural will be back for a sixth season. I have to admit I was worried. I mean, it is one of my all time favorite shows. Even better that Mr. Kripke is going to be coming back as well. He’s great!
Apparently Kripke is stepping “down” to executive producer and Gamble is stepping “up” to head honcho. Still, good news about another season. I hope they take the opportunity to do something interesting with the post-Apocalypse premise.
Not surprised. Can you imagine how burnt out he must be?
I think they need to go “quiet” next year. Too many apocalypses lately.
I’m exited to read the good news! Fine acting, mesmerizing plots and characters. A show that has become a favorite of mine.
