- A way-too-short article on how Terry Gilliam finished The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus without Heath Ledger. Interesting to read that Johnny Depp did his fill-in for Heath all in a day and a half without any rehearsal!
Speaking of Parnassus, I saw the film this week, and I think it’s a failure — one of Terry Gilliam’s least accessible films (which is saying something!). But it’s a spectacular failure, and the way he replaced Heath with Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell was clever and beautiful. Full review to follow next week!
- Oscar buzz for Avatar?
- Peter Jackson hints that, of the Lord of the Rings cast, Hugo Weaving (Elrond) and Cate Blanchett (Galadriel) may return for The Hobbit. What a tease!
- A rumor that Tobey Maguire may play Bilbo. I don’t buy it.
- Speaking of Peter Jackson, critics are not liking The Lovely Bones.
- Stephen King clarifies: don’t expect that Shining sequel any time soon — and maybe not ever!
- Hilarious list of things that will not save publishing (and things that will!).
- The next movie from Japan’s Studio Ghibli will be an adaptation of The Borrowers. Interesting choice.
- The author of the 300 graphic novel is working on a sequel (or prequel). Gee, I wonder if they’ll make a movie out of it!
- Eleven movies that changed sci-fi (and nine that didn’t). I agree with this list (but then who wouldn’t?).
- A remake of The Creature From the Black Lagoon may be in the works. What took ‘em so long?

Thanks for the heads up on The Borrowers going manga. That will get honourable mention on my own blog this week. It’s so whimsical and sideways, it makes perfect sense.
Gilliam’s most inaccessible film? That sounds scary. Looking forward to the review–convince me not to see it, please.
It all depends on how big a fan you are. If you find even his “failures” interesting, you should see it. But it is definitely a failure, IMHO.
Coolness. Animated “The Borrowers”. I hope it’s better than that awful movie they made, but just as good (if not better) than the wonderful TV series.
“300″ prequel could be cool. I don’t understand why it would be called Xerxes if it is based on the events of the Battle of Marathon when Darius was leading the Persians, but it’s probably best not to think too much about such things. Always happy to see more Ancient Greek goodness.
