Legend of the Seeker, the heir apparent to Hercules and Xena (and brought to you by the same production team), is airing its much-anticipated second season premiere the weekend of November 7th (check local listings, as the show is syndicated). As one of the few shows on television that can be categorized as a straight-up high fantasy, many genre fans are eagerly awaiting its return.
For those not in the know, Seeker is an adventure story about a young man, Richard Cypher (played by the ab-tastic Craig Horner — see our interview here) who is known as the Seeker, and was prophesied to defeat the evil tyrant Darken Rahl. You knew he was evil, you see, because his name is Darken.
But now that Rahl’s dead, what will the series do? Or is he dead? Given how loosely the show followed its source material — the Sword of Truth novels by Terry Goodkind — it might be anyone’s guess.
(If you honestly don’t want to know, don’t watch the trailer, below.)
Richard is once again joined by a beautiful woman named Kahlan, who is a Confessor, and with her raven-dark hair, bright blue eyes, and penchant for brutal ass-kicking, she is more than a little reminiscent of Xena, though her persona is much softer than the leather- and metal-clad warrior princess.
Rounding out the trio of heroes is Zeddicus, who is something of a puppet-master but with good intentions, and is also Richard’s grandfather.
Guesting this season in a multi-episode arc is Charisma Carpenter — Cordelia from Buffy and Angel.
Legend of the Seeker quickly built a rather impressive fan base, perhaps proof that there is a very real hunger for high fantasy on the small screen, even amidst a vapid craze for vampire-laden urban fantasy. Setting Seeker apart from its ancient Greek predecessors is a lack of the self-aware humor that Hercules and Xena were so well-known for, which could be a reason for its popularity: it believes firmly in the story it’s telling, and thus, so do we.
After a thoroughly satisfying season finale, fans are slowly beginning to foam at the mouth to see what happens next. Until the season premiere, there’s naught to do but imagine…and scavenge the video preview for possible future storylines.

YAY! Can’t wait to see more “Legend of the Seeker”.
I’ve been spoiling myself with every bit of news possible. Totally evil and reprehensible, but absolutely necessary.
Has Charisma Carpenter confirmed multiple episodes? The last I heard was that she was in one episode and would love to return, but nothing has been confirmed. Another Mord Sith character of “Cara” (from the season 1 finale) is returning for multiple episodes.
Kevin Sorbo aka Hercules himself has been approached to guest-star in a few episodes, although I don’t think he has confirmed just yet. In addition to pilfering actors from Xena, Hercules (including the main man himself) and Buffy, they’ve also searched the Star Trek cast and scored Joelene Blalock.
Any chance of another interview with Craig Horner? Or the Torch’s first interview with Bridget Regan or Craig Parker?
Charisma is at least 2 episodes, as I understand it.
And we’re working on an interview with Briget! We’ll see if it happens….
Bizarre. so many of my replies seem to go missing.
Great news about Charisma Carpenter appearing in two episodes. There can never be too many hot chicks in red leather cat-suits.
Also great news about a possible interview with Bridget Regan. You *MUST* ask her the obligatory “would you like to play Wonder Woman” question.
A Craig Park interview may also be of value to the Torch’s first cousin/brother/red-haired step-sibling website afterelton.com.
Tried, and failed, to enjoy this. Too po faced and serious.
They ditched the “we’re as hard-core as Lord of the Rings” vibe pretty early on in the series and embraced a few more of the fun/cheesy elements from Hercules and Xena later on, most notably in episodes like “Mirror, Mirror”.
It will be intersting to see whether they keep the lighter tone in season 2 or whether they try to go back to the “super serious” approach at least for the initial episodes. Some of the casting slides indicate they are introducing some “lighter/funnier” characters in the second season.
Hmm, may give it another chance then. Straight dramas I enjoy if theres a strand of humour in then, here I couldnt sit still for more then ten minutes with them being so dull and went to the gym instead.
An aside here “impressive fan base”? Didnt it get around 4 million, that aint huge compared to the shows its descended from.
I expect the 2nd season to be darker since the underworld’s been breached. I’m having a hard time imagining another funny episode to the extent of “Mirror”.
I do think they tried TOO hard to be the anti-XENA for much of the season. Earnest-ness is fine as far as it goes, but a little goes a long way….
I actually like when it’s more serious (not a fan of the cheesy humor). The humor in the books is definitely not cheesy, but intelligent and sometimes dark. I think that feeling from the books would improve the show. I don’t want to see it with no humor, but I could do without the cheese.
I t is a good post
