SUPERNATURAL Episode Review: Dean Sees the Future (and it Involves President Sarah Palin!)

Four and a Half Torches (Out of Five)

Warning: This review contains spoilers for the “The End” episode of Supernatual.

Have I ever said how great I think this show is? I believe I may have mentioned it once or twice, no?

What happens to the world if Dean continues to say no to being the Angel Michael’s vessel?

President Sarah Palin. Bombing Houston, no less!

Hilarious! Supernatural has shown us some pretty scary nasties, but to my mind,  “President Palin” may be the scariest of them all!

In an effort to get Dean to agree to be Michael’s vessel, Zachariah sends Dean five years into the future — an extremely bleak future.

But what the episode is really about is, of course,  Dean’s future without Sam. Sam, we learn from Dean’s future self, died in Detroit.

Except he didn’t really die. We later learn that Sam said “yes” to Lucifer and became his vessel. The Dean of the future desperately regrets not saying “yes” to Michael, in the chance that he could have prevented this (and President Palin!).

In a terrific show-down in a garden with Lucifer, who I am starting to really love as a character, the fallen angel tells Dean that there isn’t anything he can do to prevent that garden meeting.

Great writing for a great scene! And nice foreshadowing of the “futility” of Dean’s fight against evil. Nice, steady raising of the season-long stakes.

In the end, this peek at the future doesn’t change Dean’s mind about become Michael’s vessel, but it does change his mind about being estranged from Sam.

“We keep each other human,” Dean says to his brother once they’ve reunited, meaning it figuratively (that they keep each other humble), but also literally (that they will keep each other from becoming the vessels for Michael and Lucifer, respectively).

Anyway, Sam and Dean are back together, and the show totally earned it.

And I continue to be amazed by what a great show this is, and what a terrific season this is turning out to be.

I’m still cursing you Brent for getting em hooked. Only the first two seasons are available for rent here, and they’re 2/3 of the way through three and I don’t want to start watching that far into the season.

CURSE YOU HARTINGER!! (but not really)
