- A critic has popped Up’s critical balloon! The latest Pixar movie had, so far, scored a perfect 100% “fresh” out of 30 reviews … but now New York critic Armond White has weighed in with a negative review. On one hand, I can relate, because I’m one of only three people who really didn’t like WALL-E (except for the first 30 minutes, which were charming) and felt Ratatouille was beautifully “drawn,” but muddled in its storytelling. Then again, his review makes White sound a little like the curmudgeon at the center of Up.
An interesting interview with the woman who plays the gypsy in Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell (opening tomorrow), where she talks about how they did the make-up on the character.
- Hollywood is desperately looking for children’s books (frequently fantasy books) to turn into movies, but they have to be exactly the right kinds of books. According to the Los Angeles Times, “They can’t skew too young or too old. And the marketing must clearly tell parents what to expect, studio executives say.”
- The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, frequent fantasy director Terry Gilliam’s latest film (and the last movie from Heath Ledger, who died mid-way through and had his role finished by Colin Farrell, Johnny Depp, and Jude Law) screened at Cannes, but the reviews were not good.
- Despite the fact that the first movie disappointed, another Lemony Snicket movie is possible.
- The owners of the rights to the 1992 Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie want a “reboot” movie, but without any of the supporting characters from the TV series (and, no doubt, without Sarah Michelle Gellar). The whole universe has already weighed in, but I’ll add my two cents and say: Worst. Idea. Ever.
- The next Tomb Raider movie will be an Angelina-free “origin” story. I’ll say it: I’m finally getting sick of “origin” stories.
- Being Human, the BBC series about a ghost, a vampire, and a werewolf who live together as roommates, will finally premiere on BBC America in July.
- This is kinda cool: Shane Rangi, an actor-stuntman, has been cast in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, after appearing in multiple roles (including a were-wolf and both minotaurs) in the first two Chronicles of Narnia movies. Will he eventually appear in all seven films, should they get made?

Being Human is EXCELLENT! I thoroughly enjoyed the first series and I’m readily looking forward to the second series. I didn’t see the “leaked” pilot with the slightly different cast, but each of the lead actors in the series is great (especially Russell Tovey as George the … Nurse).
Summer Glau for teenage Lara Croft. She’s out of work now that Terminator has been cancelled and as much as Joss Whedon wants to use her on Dollhouse, I’m not sure it will be a full-time role. If they’re aiming for a moderately younger Lara Croft, then Rhona Mitra for the role (although she *looks* about the same age as Angelina Jolie, so not sure she’ll be in the running).
As for a Whedon-free “Buffy” movie. Not interested. I will admit to being ever so slightly interested in a series of movies which explores the Slayer mythology with Buffy’s past/future Slayers (although I realise that would probably contradict the canon of the TV series and season 8/Fray comic books). But I expect any Whedon-free Buffy will end up looking awfully similar to “Twilight”.
I’m excited to see it. And Summer Glau is a GREAT Laura Croft!
>Worst. Idea. Ever.<
Ditto.
In Joss-speak: Going to suck much?
Being Human was really good. Can’t wait for season 2. I saw the pilot episode and it was ok, but they definitely improved on it for the series.
Any tampering with Buffy without Joss Whedon’s ok is a terrible idea. Just leave it alone.
