Dan Brown, author of Angels & Demons, has reminded us of something. Something of old. There are whispers heard in dark alleys. Rumors muttered under one’s breath of hidden conspiracies. And a name that keeps resurfacing generation after generation.
Illuminati.
Sounds sexy, doesn’t it? It’s fun to say out loud. It even has the word “naughty” in it. Hey, maybe I just found another hidden conspiracy.
Dan Brown clearly loves this stuff, as evidenced by his fascination with the Knights Templar and The Priory of Sion found in The Da Vinci Code, and the Illuminati in Angels & Demons (the movie version of which opens tomorrow). He claims that while his work is fiction, the groups, rituals, and locations are all real.
But what exactly is this mysterious group ?
The Illuminati were a secret society that began in Bavaria in 1776 as an offshoot of the Enlightenment movement, which was a period in which reason and logic, not religion or tradition, were seen as the true seat of authority. It’s said that members of the Illuminati were seeking to infiltrate and slowly convert European governments to their way of thinking.
So far, so good.
But why is the Illuminati almost always cast in fiction as a shadow organization dedicated to controlling the planet through a totalitarian New World Order? Because the group valued secrecy. In fact, the original members of the group have been accused of creating a false genealogy to imply the society is centuries older than it actually is, which adds to its air of having an ancient, mythical origin.
So what’s the real story? The Illuminati really did exist, and many powerful and influential men were among their ranks. But if they still exist today, it is almost certainly as a historical curiosity with no power or influence.
But conspiracy theorists — and there are many — would have you believe that they definitely exist, and that we, the drooling public, are mere pawns in a very large game of which we have no awareness.
Some allege that the Illuminati have already infiltrated our governments and taken control of our banks. The group might even have ultimate power over our money and financial institutions, as can supposedly be evidenced by the All-Seeing Eye, the pagan symbol of the Illuminati, appearing over the Egyptian pyramid on our one-dollar bill. They are responsible for not only our national debt, but the debt of countries the world over. They are the collectors of this debt.
Supposedly, they might also control the media, and made it possible that footage on 9/11 was edited to imply the twin towers collapsed due to being hit by planes instead of the truth, which is that there were explosives already planted in the towers by the US government under the control of George W. Bush, a well-known member of the Skull and Bones, which is controlled by the Illuminati.
In short, all conspiracies intersect in the well-appointed meeting rooms of this oh-so-secret society.
But I will counter with an argument of great weight and authority, and that argument shall be phrased thusly: Come on — seriously?
The world has been in turmoil since before recorded history, and I find it very doubtful that there exists a cabal of leaders from all different countries working together to form a single, totalitarian government. It’s just not in human nature for a group of human beings to work together in harmony for so long — especially if those humans are politicians. Everyone wants to be the guy on top. It’s kind of sweet, actually, the idea of all these people working together, hand in hand. But it’s not very likely.
And besides, if they really are such dazzling masterminds, and such experts at secrecy, would they really be so stupid as to print evidence of themselves on every dollar bill? Isn’t this as stupid as the terrorists who supposedly thrust Barrack Obama on us giving him the middle name “Hussein”?
Then again, maybe the Illuminati are not really human after all. My favorite conspiracy theorist of the moment, David Icke, has stumbled on the real truth: the Illuminati, which boasts members such as Tony Blair, George W. Bush, and Hillary Clinton (I guess Bill’s not in the know), is actually made up of shape-shifting reptilian aliens.
In short, we’re being taken over by the creatures from the old miniseries V. Now that’s a conspiracy I can believe in!
Dan Brown has gone on record saying that he really believes the Illuminati are out there, that they are legion, and that they are dangerous. For Angels & Demons, he researched them endlessly.
But he’s also the guy who wrote Deception Point and Digital Fortress, so, you know, take it with a grain of salt.

Wat we need is free flow info were peaple/sheeple are more aware of wats happening behing the stage.
